If Russia is attacked with a ballistic missile, Moscow will launch a nuclear strike
MOSCOW, (BM) – The Ministry of Defense explained under what conditions Russia can inflict a crushing blow on the enemy, including with the use of nuclear weapons, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Russian news agency Izvestia.
The head of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff of the RF Armed Forces, Major General Andrei Sterlin and leading researcher at the Center for Military Strategic Research of the Military Academy of the General Staff, Alexander Khryapin, in an article published on August 7 in the newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda, told what “red lines” would not be crossed by potential adversaries worth it.
“The first condition is related to the receipt of reliable information about the launch of ballistic missiles attacking the territory of Russia and / or its allies. The fact of the launch of a ballistic missile will be recorded by the missile attack warning system,” the article says.
In this case, the answer will follow in the case of the use of any weapons of mass destruction, both nuclear and conventional.
In the article, the military also noted that the United States continues to withdraw from the main treaties that guarantee stability in the world and provoke a new arms race. All this can lead the world “to the brink of nuclear catastrophe.”
On June 2, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved the Fundamentals of State Policy in the Field of Nuclear Deterrence. The document describes the main threats to the country in this area.
The document notes that the subjects of containment by the Russian Federation are countries that possess nuclear weapons, countries that regard Moscow as an enemy, military blocs and alliances, as well as states that provide their territory for the deployment of strategic offensive weapons.
The doctrine implies that the Russian Federation can use nuclear weapons in response to an attack. In 2018, Washington adopted a new nuclear doctrine and reserved the right to strike first.
Some Russian generals believe Moscow will not have time to respond to a missile attack
Russian missile defense systems require “tens of minutes” to repel a massive nuclear strike, the Russian Major General Sergei Grabchuk said in January this year.
Contrary to claims that Russian missile defense systems are always ready to repel any missile strike, Major General Sergei Grabchuk, the commander of the 1st Air Defense / Missile Defense Division of the Air Defense Forces, unexpectedly stated in an interview with Krasnaya Zvezda that in reality, it takes several tens of minutes to repulse a missile strike.
“After the completion of the active section of the flight of a ballistic missile, a complex ballistic target is formed, which consists of warheads covered by dozens of false targets. Such a complex ballistic target moves toward a defended object at a speed of up to seven kilometers per second. The fact of a missile launch is recorded by our space echelon of a missile attack warning system, further tracking of a complex ballistic target is carried out by radar stations, which are the second ground echelon of a missile attack warning system, which are located along the border of our country” the general said.
“If targets attack Moscow, the missile attack warning system generates target designations for the missile defense system, which begins its combat cycle. The duration of the combat operation of the missile defense system is up to several tens of minutes. Target detection is carried out at ranges of several thousand kilometers. At the same time, the task of separating warheads from a variety of false targets, clarifying their trajectories is being continuously solved, and at the estimated time, missile launchers are launched and guided to the meeting points, where warheads are destroyed,” also he added.
What exactly period of time should be understood by several tens of minutes is unknown, however, it was previously reported that the flight time of American ballistic missiles to targets on the territory of Russia is about 10-12 minutes.
For what reasons, Russian missile defense systems, which are on constant combat alert, need so much time – it is not known.
