Better than Makarov: Russia launched mass production of new pistols
MOSCOW, (BM) – In Russia, the serial production of the newest self-loading 9-mm pistol “Boa” has begun, which is expected to replace the Makarov pistol, which has been in service since 1951, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.

The novelty, in comparison with the famous predecessor, has a longer range and a larger magazine. They tried to replace the PM more than once, but not a single potential model began to be massively used in the Russian troops.
TsNIITochmash, part of Rostec, has begun production of the first batch of the newest self-loading 9-mm Udav pistol, the press service of Rostec reported with reference to the head of TsNIITochmash Albert Bakov.
“Work on the Udav complex, which started in March 2014, has moved to the stage of serial production. This suggests that the armed forces have tested, made recommendations and suggestions for finalizing the rifle complex, which have been fully implemented by our enterprise. An order for the first production batch has been received,” the state corporation is quoted as saying.
Bakov is convinced that with its characteristics and ergonomics, the Boa constrictor will be of interest not only to the Russian Armed Forces, but also to other law enforcement agencies and amateurs of practical shooting in Russia and abroad.
The state corporation said that original solutions were used in the design of the new pistol, which provide the pistol with a number of advantages in comparison with the pistols CZ, Glock, Walther, Colt and others.
“Among the patented technologies is the design of the magazine, which is an indicator of the number of cartridges, which, both visually and tactilely, allows you to identify a fully loaded magazine. In addition, the pistol complex provides a muffler with a replaceable heat-absorbing module and two types of cartridges – increased penetration and reduced bullet speed,” noted Rostec.
Self-loading pistol “Boa” 9-mm caliber is a completely domestic development, which is assembled from Russian components. It can shoot at a distance of up to 100 m. At a distance of up to 75 m, the weapon penetrates individual body armor, including fabric, and second-class helmets.
“Boa constrictor” operates in the temperature range -50 … + 50 °. The mass of a pistol with a magazine without cartridges is 780 g, length – 206 mm, height – 145 mm. Warranty shot – 10 thousand shots.
The magazine holds 18 rounds of 9X21 mm. The pistol allows you to use the entire range of 9×21 mm ammunition: tracer, armor-piercing, expansive.
Especially for the “Boa” developed two newest cartridges – subsonic and increased penetration.
The new pistol complex passed state tests and received a recommendation for adoption. “The tests have confirmed the high tactical and technical characteristics of the pistol, its survivability and ability to function in extreme conditions,” said the press service of the Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering.
The interdepartmental commission deciding on the admission of weapons to mass production completed the work, after which the pistol was assigned the letter “O1”.
In January, RIA Novosti, citing the press service of the Department of Information and Mass Communications of the Russian Defense Ministry, reported that the military department in 2020 will supply 50 Udav pistols. A batch of the latest weapons will go to the Ministry of Defense as part of the execution of the state defense order.
In June 2019, Albert Bakov announced that the first batch of Boas had entered service with the Russian army. At the same time, their experimental military operation began.
In January of the same year, the Zvezda TV channel reported that the Boa constrictor should replace the Makarov pistol (PM), which was put into service back in 1951. In Russia, they have repeatedly tried to replace the PM in the Armed Forces, but any new items, for example, the Yarygin pistol and the Serdyukov pistol, never became widespread in the Russian army.
According to TsNIITOCHMASH engineer Kirill Dugin, “Boa constrictor” is a more powerful weapon than PM.
In a conversation with a reporter of the TV channel, he drew attention to the fact that the maximum effective range of the Makarov pistol is about 40-50 m, while for the Udav this figure is 100 m. In addition, the PM store can only hold eight rounds versus 18 for the Udav.
