American military experts named Russia’s advantage over the United States

WASHINGTON, (BM) – Russia will get a tangible advantage over the United States when its Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) becomes operational, learned according the US edition of of The National Interest.

The author of the material noted that the range of its flight will significantly exceed the range of its predecessor, the RS-36 Voevoda missile. It is expected that “Sarmat” will enter service in 2021.

When Russia adopts the new Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), it will have a tangible advantage over the United States, writes The National Interest columnist Caleb Larson.

He called the Sarmat a heavy, liquid-fueled, silo-based ICBM and recalled that it is being developed to replace the RS-36 Voevoda missile (also known as the SS-18 Satan by NATO classification).

As the author writes, in comparison with its predecessor, created during the Soviet era, “Sarmat” will have an increased flight range – 18 thousand km, while the “Voevoda” it is 10 thousand km.

The number of warheads in the multiple warhead of the new ICBM will be up to 16.

The American edition noted that “Sarmat” can also be used as a delivery vehicle for hypersonic maneuvering guided warheads, which are currently also under development. Development of this ICBM began in the 2000s, and the initial prototype appeared in 2015.

During the development of the rocket, problems sometimes arose, for example, the first test launch from a ground mine revealed technical problems in the equipment of the launch system. The arrival of the first production samples to the troops was originally planned for 2018, and then postponed to 2021.

At the beginning of last month, experts from the Chinese publication The Paper published an article about the Sarmat, in which they argued that this weapon could well claim the status of a “super-missile”. The article stated that the United States’ anti-missile systems would not be able to repel the strike of this ICBM for a long time. Chinese media representatives write that

when creating this weapon, the latest achievements in the field of rocketry were used, and this made it possible to create a truly unique apparatus.

“The characteristics allow“ Sarmat ”to be called a super-rocket and the main pillar of state security,” stated the author of the material.

In December last year, the commander of the Strategic Missile Forces, Colonel-General Sergei Karakaev, told the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper that Sarmat would surpass its predecessor in many ways. According to him, this ICBM can be equipped with a wide range of warheads, including new generation hypersonic units.

He noted that preparations for flight tests of a new missile complex with the Sarmat missile are already underway. “It is planned to gradually re-equip all missile formations with the new Yars, Avangard and Sarmat missile systems,” the colonel general stressed.

In the same month, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergei Lavrov, announced that Moscow was ready to integrate the Avangard and Sarmat missile systems into the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START III) if it was extended.

According to Lavrov, Russia announced to the United States about the presentation of new missile systems, which are supposed to be covered by the existing START-3 treaty and will be included in it upon extension.

The minister drew attention to the fact that the Avangard system had already been shown to American experts. “At a certain stage, we will be ready to do this with Sarmat,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs assured.

To date, negotiations are underway to extend START III, which will expire in 2021. This document loses its validity after five years from the date of its prolongation, and now Moscow and Washington have the opportunity to renew it again. However, the future of the document remains unclear, since the United States has not yet expressed its intention to prolong the agreement.

Last fall, “Vedomosti”, citing a source, reported that the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it would conduct tests of the RS-28 “Sarmat” ICBM in 2020. Within the first stage, it is expected that about five launches will be carried out. They will be held with a weight and size model of the warhead from the silo at the Plesetsk cosmodrome.

For the first time since 1987, launches will be carried out from a positioning area in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. According to the publication, the missile system may become part of the armament in 2021, if it successfully passes the tests.
