Russian Zubr hovercraft is real killing machines, a Polish expert said
WARSAW, (BM) – Russian ships “Zubr” are real hovercraft killing machines. This is stated in the publication of the Polish edition WhatNext, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
The columnist for the Polish edition, Mateusz Zhyson, recalls that the Russian Ministry of Defense has recently published a video showing the exercises in the Kaliningrad region. He draws the readers’ attention to the fact that the ship “Evgeny Kocheshkov”, which was built within the framework of the project 12322 “Zubr”, took part in the military maneuvers.
“Probably the only class of armed hovercraft in the world.” notes the observer of the Polish edition.
The video, released on July 21, shows an exercise in the Kaliningrad region of Russia, where a hovercraft is the protagonist. The footage shows how the Zubr swims to the shore, lowers the ramp onto the sand, and the Russian marines drive off in armored vehicles BTR-82A.
Evgeny Kocheshkov is one of two Russian hovercraft. The ships were built in 1991 in St. Petersburg as part of the Zubr project and are designed to transport a large number of marines during landing raids over short distances.
The Zubr-class hovercraft weighs 415 tons with cargo, has a crew of 33 and can carry up to 10 BTR-82A armored personnel carriers, three main tanks and 360 marines. All thanks to five gas turbine engines with a capacity of 12,100 horsepower each.
Most interestingly, although every power has a military hovercraft, only the Russians are armed with them. Representatives of the Zubr project are armed with two surface-to-air missile launchers, AK-630M cannons, each with six 30-mm barrels, and, finally, two 140-mm missile launchers.
According to the observer of the Polish edition, it is such a large assortment of weapons that makes the Zubr rental ships real killing machines.
Besides Russia, China operates four more Zubr hovercraft, while Greece operates four more. The US Navy operates several dozen air-cushion landing craft (LCAC) designed to ferry troops, vehicles and supplies.
The LCAC can even carry M1A1 main battle tanks. The ship is unarmed and will eventually be replaced by a new ship-to-shore connector (SSC).
The American columnist Kyle Mizokami believes that the Zubr projects, although unique, probably will not last long, since they were put into service in 1991 and should have served only 16 years.

“These ships will determine the appearance of the Russian Navy in the 21st century. We see the result of labor today in this ship,” said Mikhail Budnichenko, CEO of Sevmash.
After the cruiser was taken out of the maintenance workshop, he moved to the pool of the enterprise. Soon the ship will undergo factory and state tests.
The serial nuclear-powered submarine cruiser Prince Oleg was built according to the improved Borey-A project and belongs to the fourth generation of nuclear-powered submarines. In addition, the submarine is equipped with Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles, writes Gazeta.ru.
The Director General of the United Shipbuilding Corporation Alexei Rakhmanov on June 29 announced that the submarine Prince Oleg will be part of the Russian Navy this year.
In March, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, said that a fifth-generation submarine with even more advanced characteristics was being developed in the country.
The US Navy cannot track Russian submarines.
The American National Interest magazine appreciated the Russian submarines of the Ash project and the stealth of these submarines, because of which the United States lost their mark in the past.
The magazine reminded the words of Rear Admiral of the American Navy Dave Johnson, who was so impressed by Severodvinsk, the lead ship of the project, that he ordered his model for his office, “so as not to forget what the Navy will have to deal with.”
One of the advantages of “Ash” submarines is stealth. So, in 2018, when the Russian submarine sailed in the Atlantic Ocean, the US military could not find it for several weeks. In peacetime, losing a Russian submarine is a headache. During a conflict, losing a track of a submarine is a mortal danger,” the author concluded.
Submarines of the Ash project are a series of fourth-generation domestic multi-purpose submarines. The lead ship of the project – the nuclear submarine Severodvinsk – entered the fleet in 2014.
This fall, the Kazan submarine, designed under the modernized Yasen-M project, is also expected to be adopted. As part of this series, the domestic fleet should also receive the submarines Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Arkhangelsk, Perm, Ulyanovsk and two more ships.
