Has US pressure on Russia begun? The Kremlin is ready to discuss Syria
MOSCOW, (BM) – James Geoffrey, the US Special Representative for Syria, claims that Moscow is increasingly ready to discuss ways to resolve the situation in the Arab country with Washington, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
He made a statement on Wednesday at a briefing for journalists, the text of which was distributed by the press service of the State Department.
“We see some, albeit modest, signals from Moscow from unofficial but authoritative sources that they have some doubts about which path they have taken regarding [President Bashar] Assad, and they really should [doubt]. We see “at least to some extent, a greater willingness on the part of Russia to study with us, with our friends in the European Union and individual European countries, as well as individual Arab states, possible steps to mitigate the crisis in Syria. All of these signs, we believe, are positive.” -said Jeffrey.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said that Washington is introducing new sanctions under the “Caesar Act,” or the “Syria Civilian Protection Act,” which includes Assad and his wife Asma. A total of 39 individuals and organizations were affected by restriction.
The list includes, in particular, 16 companies from Syria, two based in Austria, as well as one organization from Canada and another from Lebanon.
Caesar’s Law was included in the U.S. military budget for fiscal year 2020 and signed by President Donald Trump on December 20, 2019. This document gives the Washington administration the right to impose restrictive measures against organizations and individuals directly or indirectly assisting the Syrian government, as well as various armed groups operating in the country, which, according to the United States, are supported by the authorities of Syria, Russia and Iran.
The introduction of sanctions for activities in the oil and gas sector of the Syrian economy, the fields of military aviation, design and construction. In addition, restriction can be applied to the Central Bank of the Arab Republic.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry had previously condemned the document, the statement stated that it “is based on false evidence fabricated by parties hostile to the Syrian people.” The foreign ministry regarded the tightening of US sanctions “as economic terror, which is part of a bloody war unleashed against Syria.”
