WASHINGTON, (BM) – The US Senate Committee on Armed Forces has approved a defense budget of $ 740 billion, according to voting results, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing RIA Novosti.

According to the news agency, 25 members of the committee voted for the bill, and there were two against it. The bill still has to be adopted by the full Senate, then it should be agreed with the draft House of Representatives and, if necessary, to vote again, and only then it will be signed by President Donald Trump.

Among the measures of the bill is a proposal to rename military bases, named after the generals of the slave-owning South in the Civil War. Senator Elizabeth Warren made the amendment amid protests and riots after the death of African-American George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis.

The defense budget is also expanding funding for missile defense elements and hypersonic weapons, including components for THAAD airborne interception systems, the agency said.

In general, the US defense budget project focuses on strategic competition with Russia and China, according to a brief summary of a document circulated by the US Senate Armed Forces Committee.

In particular, the bill extends the ban on the transfer of missile technologies to Russia and the integration of the US missile defense system with similar systems in China and Russia.

It is intended to fully extend the “Containment Initiative in Europe”, directed against Russia and implying the rotation of the American contingent in Europe.

The Pentagon’s head is required to present a report “on Russian support for racial-ethnic extremist groups preaching violence” in Europe and the USA. At the same time, senators do not say what kind of “support” they have in mind.

The ban on military cooperation with Russia and any actions that would recognize Russian sovereignty over Crimea are also being extended.

In addition, the bill contains a declaration that long-term strategic competition with Russia is a top priority for US defense and requires additional investment and containment initiatives.

A separate item is devoted to the alleged threat from the equipment of Chinese firms Huawei and ZTE when creating 5G cellular networks, RIA Novosti reports.
