Russia has invented a new way to launch missiles, media announced

MOSCOW, (BM) – Specialists of the Fakel Design Bureau named after Grushin and NPP Radar MMS proposed firing rockets from aircraft from vertical launchers using a mortar launch, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing the patent documentation.

“The method of vertical air launch of missiles involves the vertical launch of a rocket from a launch container placed on an air carrier,” TASS quotes an extract from the text of a patent for an invention published in the database of the Federal Institute of Industrial Property (FIPS).

The invention, the authors note, will allow launching guided missiles, anti-missiles and ballistic missiles from aircraft.

The rocket should be thrown out of the launcher without starting the engine – using, for example, a powder pressure accumulator that pumps powder gases that push the rocket out. Such a launch is called mortar or “cold” and assumes that the rocket starts the marching engine with a delay, that is, at a safe distance from its carrier.

In order to compensate for the pressure on the rocket’s body from the flow of air rushing onto a flying airplane, the authors propose the use of stabilization engines in the nose of the rocket. In their opinion, the proposed solution with a mortar launch will allow for the safe firing of rockets from aircraft “even in the parking lot (airfield, home base), without progress”.

Mortar launch is used in many Russian missile systems, for example, in mine and mobile strategic missile systems, in a number of anti-aircraft missile systems, on strategic submarines.

The inventors note that “means known prior to the priority date of the invention and widely used in the construction of missile launch containers and the design of missile control systems may be used.”

In the document, the “cold” start is contrasted with the “hot” one, which provides for the launch of the rocket propulsion engine directly in the launcher. As the authors note, the “hot” method of vertical launch of missiles from an airplane was previously proposed by developers from the United States. However, it is associated with a number of technical difficulties caused by the operation of the rocket engine inside the fuselage of its air carrier.

Recall that in November 2019 it became known that Russia developed a motor scheme for a space rocket carrier aircraft.
