Destruction of drones is becoming a mandatory training for Russian pilots

MOSCOW, (BM) – Detection and destruction of drones will be regularly practiced in exercises. Starting this year, when crews conduct tactical flight maneuvers, live firing on targets that mimic small-sized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will become mandatory, learned citing TASS and Izvestia.

“The experience of recent battles in Syria and Libya shows that drones are becoming a dangerous force, and air defense can not always cope with them,” said military expert Vladislav Shurygin. “They can bypass air defense zones and suddenly attack equipment and important objects. Therefore in the fight against them, we need aviation that can quickly cover our troops.”

Since 2018, Russian bases in Syria have been regularly attacked by unmanned bombers of terrorists of the Jebhat al-Nusra group. According to the Ministry of Defense, only in 2019, about 60 attacking drones were destroyed. All of them were intercepted by air defense systems or forced to land by electronic warfare.

There are still few examples of successful aircraft battles against UAVs, although, according to the honored test pilot Igor Malikov, shooting a drone is easier than drive a vehicle. Drones, as a rule, do not maneuver, although they are more difficult to detect. In addition, they move at a low speed, and the aircraft can rush past him if reconnaissance equipment does not fix the device on time.

On the other hand, any missile with which an aircraft is armed is many times more expensive than a small drone, Malikov noted. And suitable ammunition to combat the UAV industry has yet to be developed.

The Russian army is already creating special units to deal with small drones. Since 2018, they began to form in all formations and parts of the Southern Military District. Colonel-General Alexander Dvornikov, commander of the troops of the South-Eastern Military District, ordered this.

He led the Russian group in Syria and gained experience in organizing the counteraction of enemy strike UAVs. Such groups include machine gunners and snipers trained to fire on small drones, as well as Krasukha electronic warfare systems and anti-aircraft missile-cannon armor.
