‘Wherever the Americans are, we’re right next to them’, Iran has warned
TEHRAN, (BM) – One hundred new combat vessels were handed over to the naval forces of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) in the southern Iranian port city of Bendar Abbas, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Tasnim news agency.
“We announce today that wherever the Americans are, we are right next to them, and they will feel our presence even more in the near future,” the Guards’ navy chief Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri said during a ceremony in southern Iran.
The handed over vessels are improved versions of the Ashura, Tarek and Zolfagar class boats. They are made by the organization of the marine industry of the Ministry of Defense and the naval forces of the IRGC.
“Advancing while remaining defensive is the nature of our work,” said Guards commander Major General Hossein Salami.
“But this does not equal passivity against the enemy,” he added, noting that Iran “will not bow down to any foe.”
The ceremony was also attended by Iranian Minister of Defense Brigadier General Amir Khatami.
Decades-old acrimony between the two [US and Iran – ed.] worsened in 2018 when US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from a deal that gave Iran relief from sanctions in return for curbs on its nuclear programme.
Tensions escalated further in January when a US air strike killed Qasem Soleimani, the top Iranian general who headed the Guards’ foreign arm, the Quds Force.
