Russia may adopt a new 80-millimeter S-8 unguided missiles for their Su-25s
MOSCOW, (BM) – The executive director of the Techmash research and production corporation, Alexander Kochkin, in an interview with RIA Novosti, reported on the planned serial deliveries of the latest Armor-Piercer missiles to the Russian army in 2021.
Kochkin recalled that according to the results of state tests of the new missile, which were completed in 2019, the state customer specified certain requirements of the technical task. The agency’s interlocutor added that today all issues with the Ministry of Defense have been resolved and in the coming days, the preparation of documents on the adoption of the Armor-Piercer for arming will begin.
Note that the Armor-Piercer missiles are designed for Su-25 type aircraft and Mi-8 series military helicopters. These missiles will complement the family of 80-millimeter S-8 unguided missiles.
According to the developers, the rocket is capable of breaking through the obstacles facing its goals, without collapsing and continuing its flight.
About Armor-Piercer missile
This missile will be armed with aircraft (Su-25 attack aircraft), Mi-8 family helicopters and attack helicopters capable of carrying NAR units.
“Armor-Piercer”, depending on the settings of the fuse, is able to break through the obstacles facing set targets. It can explode in front of an obstacle, or behind an obstacle, or, without collapsing, continue flying.
This missile will replenish the S-8 family of aircraft missiles, it has the same caliber – 80 mm and the same configuration.
At the same time, the “Armor-Piercer” surpasses the early modifications of the S-8 in combat capabilities, as it has an original warhead. Another distinguishing feature of a new generation of missile weapons is a small-sized engine with high-energy fuel.
This allowed to increase the mass of the warhead by 2-3 times while maintaining and, in some cases, to increase the maximum firing range to 6000 meters. The “Armor-Piercer” missile is 5-6 times more effective than the 80-mm NAR in service.
Thanks to new technologies and fuse settings, S-8OFP missiles will be able to hit both light and heavy armored targets: armored personnel carriers, infantry fighting vehicles, armored vehicles and battle tanks.
