The second Italian patrol ship was launched at the Fincantieri shipyard
ROME, (BM) – The Italian Navy command announced the launch of the second PPA coastal patrol ship (Pattugliatore Polivalente D’Altura) by the Fincantieri company in Riva Trigoso, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing TsAMTO.
The ship was named P431 “Francesco Morosini.”
The event, held in an abbreviated format in accordance with the current rules of conduct during the fight against coronavirus, was attended by the Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy, Vice Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone. The godmother of the ship was Fincantieri engineer Carola Morosini.
As TsAMTO reported, the construction of PPA ships is carried out by Fincantieri within the framework of the Italian Navy recovery program, which has been implemented since the beginning of 2015, the total cost of which is estimated at 5.4 billion euros (5.8 billion dollars).
Contracts for the construction of one LSS support ship and 6 PPA patrol ships (with an option for four more) in May 2015 were signed on behalf of the Italian Navy by the European Organization for Cooperation in the Field of Arms (OCCAR – Organization Conjointe de Cooperation en Matiere d’Armement) with an RTI consortium (Raggruppamento Temporaneo di Impresa) formed by Fincantieri and Finmeccanica’s Selex ES division. In November 2015, OCCAR entered into a contract with RTI for the supply of the seventh PPA ship, implementing the first option to the underlying agreement.
The steel cutting ceremony for the construction of the PPA lead ship, the P430 Paolo Thaon di Revel, took place in February 2017, the keel was laid on May 9, 2017, and launch in June 2019. He is currently undergoing tests. Delivery of the Italian Navy ship is scheduled for 2021. Steel cutting for the second ship of the series began in October 2017, the keel laying took place in February 2018. As planned, “Francesco Morosini” will be adopted by 2022.
The keel of the third ship was laid in November 2018. It is assumed that one PPA ship will be transferred to the Italian Navy annually in the period 2022-2026, with the exception of 2024, when two ships will be delivered.
The main feature of PPA ships will be a high level of innovation, which will effectively apply them in various conditions. Ships can be used both in the course of hostilities, escorts, and for performing functions in the interests of civil defense, conducting search and rescue operations, and supporting operations to provide assistance to the population affected by natural disasters.
