“According to our data, the submarine is ready to enter the arsenal of the DPRK Navy. We are closely following its commissioning,” the agency quoted intelligence sources in South Korea as saying.
According to South Korean intelligence, the new non-nuclear strategic submarine was built at military shipyards in the city of Sinpo on the east coast of the country. In July 2019, it became known that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un personally arrived at the shipyard to assess the progress of its construction.
Earlier, American and South Korean experts have repeatedly expressed the view that the DPRK is building a submarine capable of carrying ballistic missiles. In addition, the DPRK at the end of 2017 completed the development of a new ballistic missile for submarines Pukkykson-3 (Polar Star-3). The range of its action – about 2000 km – exceeds the capabilities of previous modifications.
According to South Korean experts, with a displacement of about 3,000 tons, the new submarine will be able to carry up to three Pukkykson-3 missiles.
