Washington is developing a strategy to drag Moscow into the arms race
MOSCOW, (BM) – US President Donald Trump, with his statement on Washington’s withdrawal from the Treaty on Open Skies, outlined a further course to contain Russia by withdrawing from arms control agreements, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing the Russian military expert Vladimir Evseev statement.
“Trump’s statements about the US withdrawing from this treaty mean that the Americans decided to consistently continue their attempts to drag Moscow into the arms race. This course has a strategic character for Washington, as the previous steps to contain Russia’s military and political containment did not lead to the desired results for the US leadership “, said Evseev on Friday to Interfax.
In the United States, it is hoped that a way out of such agreements and a course towards the creation of new weapons systems right up to spacewalks will force Moscow to make decisions in favor of huge defense spending, the agency’s source said.
Trump’s statement on the Treaty on Open Skies reflects a consensus among American elites, regardless of who wins the US presidential election scheduled for November 2020, Yevseyev said. “This did not start under Trump. Under Obama, this kind of action also took place. It is a kind of consensus among the American elites. The only moment that is characteristic of Trump is the most active in promoting the interests of the US military-industrial complex,” the expert notes.
Evseev believes that Washington will continue such a course of withdrawing from the agreements that were previously concluded with the participation of Moscow for at least another 10 years. “Changes are possible no earlier than 2030. (…) Washington will pursue such a course for at least two more presidential terms, regardless of who it will be. During this period, consistent steps should be expected to break all treaties.” notes the analyst.
Washington’s actions of this kind will intensify the geopolitical contradictions between Russia and the United States, but one should not expect a confrontation in the spirit of the Cold War, Yevseyev said. He noted that the position of Moscow is important here, which does not intend to exacerbate these contradictions.
