According to Pedersen, both powers can play an important role in the peace process.

According to the publication, this was Pedersen’s first appeal simultaneously to Moscow and Washington, which are in the Syrian conflict on opposite sides of the barricades.

Russia supports Bashar al-Assad, the US is on the side of the opposition. Speaking to the UN Security Council, Pedersen noted that Iran and Turkey are also important players in the Syrian conflict, agreeing on a ceasefire.

According to Pedersen, in the past many chances were missed to get away from the conflict to political negotiations. The missed opportunities were followed by new violence and toughening the positions of regional and international players. “We should not repeat this example,” leads Pedersen to Die Zeit.
