The US will resume military exercises in Europe despite coronavirus

WASHINGTON, (BM) – The US armed forces will conduct large-scale Allied Spirit exercises in Poland from June 5 to 19, despite the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, learned citing news agency Interfax and the statement of US Army command in Europe.

“All the precautions in connection with COVID-19 will be followed in order to protect the health of the participating troops,” the military said.

In the Allied Spirit exercises, according to the command, six thousand American and two thousand Polish military should take part. Large-scale training is a smaller version of the Defender Europe 2020 exercises, which were supposed to be the largest on the continent since the Cold War, but were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier, the US leadership planned to transfer about 20 thousand NATO soldiers and officers to the Defender Europe-2020 exercises. They had to work out a scenario of a potential large-scale collision with an adversary of the Alliance. During their conduct, the military also intended to work out airborne landing on the territory of the Baltic states and Georgia.
