As noted, a large and complex project is being discussed, for which a significant amount of taxpayer funds will be spent, therefore it is important to rationally use the time necessary for a detailed study of the contract, under which modern submarines for the Navy of the two states will be delivered. Currently, the goal is to complete the preparation of the contract by the end of 2020.

At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic could have a negative impact on the negotiation process. Parties have taken steps to minimize this impact. The agreement will also contain the timing and schedule for the supply of new submarines.

Recall that in February 2017, the governments of Norway and Germany decided to jointly purchase a new generation of diesel-electric submarines in the interests of the national naval forces. ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems was chosen as the preferred supplier of the parties.

According to bilateral agreements, Norway will acquire four submarines, and Germany, which already operates six Type-212A submarines, intends to replenish the fleet with two diesel-electric submarines.

Previously, the parties planned to sign a supply contract in the first half of 2020.

In the basic version, the Type-212 submarine is equipped with a diesel-electric non-volatile power plant (VNEU) on fuel cells. Submarine displacement – 1840 tons, hull length – 56.3 meters, width – 6.8 meters. The maximum diving depth is 350 meters. Submarines develop under water a speed of up to 20 knots. Autonomy of swimming – 30 days. The crew is 27 people.

According to representatives of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, submarines of the Type-212CD version will receive reduced acoustic visibility compared to submarines that are already in service with the German Navy. In addition, the new diesel-electric submarines have improved characteristics of range, speed and autonomy, which will expand the possibilities of their application.
