Testing of the latest Russian S-500 long-range air defense system has begun
MOSCOW, (BM) – The tests of the S-500 Prometheus air defense system have began and all elements of the new S-500 air defense system are testing as well, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said in an interview with Interfax, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
“All elements of the S-500 Prometheus anti-aircraft missile system are manufactured and are testing,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
In a July interview with Interfax, Borisov said the new S-500 long-range air defense system could begin to enter the Russian Armed Forces in 2020.
“Deliveries have been possible since 2020. The components of the complex have already passed preliminary factory tests and confirmed their characteristics,” he said.
As we reported earlier this week the first S-500 anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) can enter the Russian Armed Forces in 2021 according to Deputy Minister of Defense Alexei Krivoruchko.
The head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov previously told Interfax that the S-500 is ready for mass production – its main characteristics have already been confirmed during testing.
As reported, the S-500 is being developed by Almaz-Antey Concern VKO JSC as a new generation of anti-aircraft missile systems, in which it is proposed to apply the principle of separate solution to the tasks of destroying ballistic and aerodynamic targets.
The S-500 will become the basis of a unified national air defense and missile defense system (air defense-missile defense), the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper said in January 2017 under the command of the First Air Defense Army, which covers Moscow and the Central Industrial District.
According to the general designer, the S-500 has no analogues in the world and solves a whole range of tasks of both air defense and missile defense. Now the developers are testing the elements of the system with maximum savings on the funds allocated for testing.
