According to the US military, the incident occurred on May 8 between 7.02 and 8.51 Moscow time, while the explosion was not caused by a container collision with another object.

The collapsed container is numbered 37756 in the U.S. military catalog of space objects and the international designation 2011-037B.

According to data posted on the specialized website of the US Air Force, before the explosion, the object was in orbit with a minimum height of 422 kilometers and a maximum of 3606 kilometers.

Whether debris threatens existing satellites is not specified.

This object is a toroidal discharged block of tanks of the “Frigate-SB” booster block, which, when the satellite is put into orbit, is separated after fuel is consumed.

The container was used in July 2011 for delivery to space of the Spectrum-R observatory.

The Eighteenth US Air Force Space Control Squadron is engaged in the detection, tracking and identification of all artificial objects in low Earth orbit.
