Turkey recruited 11 thousand Syrian mercenaries for the war in Libya
TRIPOLI, (BM) – To conduct hostilities against the Libyan National Army (LNA) under the command of Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the Turkish authorities from the beginning of this year recruited about 11 thousand mercenaries, mainly from Syria.
Such data, citing the London-based NGO Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (SOHR) today, May 6, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
According to SOHR estimates, 7,850 pro-Turkish militants who previously fought on the Syrian front have already been deployed to a North African country.
They joined the ranks of formations loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA), led by Faiz Saraj, who continue to control the Libyan capital Tripoli. Another 3,000 mercenaries are currently being trained in camps on Turkish territory before being sent to the Libyan front.
The Syrian Observatory also called the number of deaths among pro-Turkish militants in Libya at the moment – 261.
It is alleged that the flow of manpower and weapons from Turkey in support of the GNA Sarajah has intensified in recent weeks.
As BulgarianMilitary.com reported, Marshal Khalifa Haftar, in his brief speech on April 27, announced that he led the Libyan National Army to take a “people’s mandate” to rule the country. In a speech broadcast on local television, the LNA commander, who controls the east of Libya, did not explain what form the new power structure would take. Haftar also did not go into the possible political consequences of his decision. According to him, in accordance with the wishes of the people, the LNA takes on the role of managing Libya. Haftar also promised to free the country from terrorists.
Turkey sent militants from Libya al-Mutasim Division, Sultan Murad Brigades, Sukur al-Shamal and other groups operating in northwestern Syria to Libya. The ceasefire established in Syrian Idlib (according to the agreements of Russia and Turkey of March 5) Ankara is trying to use for the transfer of additional forces from Syria to Libya.
In addition to the “Syrian armed opposition” mercenaries and large arms lots (ACV-15 infantry fighting vehicles, 35-mm anti-aircraft mounts, T-155 Firtina howitzers, etc.), Turkey previously deployed a certain number of “military advisers” to Tripoli to protect The GNA, led by Saraj from the LNA, Marshal Haftar.
Sources in French intelligence previously confirmed reports appeared in Western and Middle Eastern media about the massive desertion of Syrian mercenaries thrown by Turkey to the Libyan front. Many fortune soldiers sent by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to defend the PNS have crossed over from the North African country to Italy.
Marshal Haftar enjoys the support of Russia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates. On the side of the GNA, Sarajah is Turkey and Qatar.
