Norway plans to buy more F-35 fighter jets to defend itself against Russia

OSLO, (BM) – In a 123-page national defense development plan presented at a press conference by Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Sulberg and Defense Minister Frank Bakke-Jensen, Russia is mentioned 58 times, and China – 52 times, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Norwegian media.

Both countries are considered as the main threat to Norway.

According to national defense plan of Norway, the country has 22 new F-35 fighter jets at the moment, but plans to buy several more for the next few years. In addition, five new P-8 Poseidon will soon replace Orion marine reconnaissance aircraft.

Over the next eight years, the state will additionally allocate 16.5 billion Norwegian kroner (1.46 billion euros) to the military, and a significant part of these funds will go to the north of the country, to the border with the Murmansk region.

“For several years, the Russian military potential has changed significantly, and the country is behaving more actively and is ready to take greater risks. The Russian authorities are ready to use a wide range of military and non-military means to achieve their goals,” the authors of the plan write.

BulgarianMilitary.com recalls that in 2019, an agreement was reached on the creation of a new bilateral communication channel. According to Minister of Defense Frank Bakke-Jensen, the communication channel between Oslo and Moscow will facilitate dialogue and prevent misunderstandings in the military sphere.

The long-term development plan of the Norwegian Armed Forces for 2020 – 2024 implies the strengthening of all military branches.

The Norwegian plan includes also the Nord brigade will be reinforced with a new battalion, and the Finnmark Ground Defense Forces will receive additional firepower.

Besides purchase of new F-35 fighter jets, new military armored vehicles, as well as long-range high-precision weapons, will begin to enter the army at 2025. In addition, a new mobile unit of radiological, chemical and biological protection (RBCH) will be created.

In the late 2020s, the Norwegian Navy will include four new submarines, and four existing frigates will undergo a “deep modernization”. In addition, the service life of Skjold class corvettes will be extended.

In addition, the fleet will also create a new division of naval special forces.
