The first 100 tons of steel have already been cut.

Up to date, Ingalls has supplied the United States Navy with 11 ships of the San Antonio type. Three more ships, including the LPD 30, are under construction.

Harrisburg will become the fourteenth representative of transport docks such as San Antonio. Recall, on March 28, launched a new landing vehicle USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28) of this type. In total, the US Navy intends to have 26 such ships at its disposal.

It is important to note that Harrisburg will be the first of the ships built under the Flight II program. Thanks to numerous improvements, they will have to solve their tasks even more effectively.

Recall that ships of the type San Antonio are universal naval units that give the US Navy the ability to carry out various landing operations at a great distance from their native coasts.

Transport docks of this type are extremely large. The ship’s displacement is almost 25 thousand tons, and its length is 208 meters. In addition to crew members, on board can accommodate 700 Marines. The air group may include military transport helicopters and V-22 convertiplanes.

Note that the LPD 30 will be the second naval vessel named after the city of Harrisburg (Pennsylvania). The first was a ship commissioned during the First World War and served from May 29, 1918 to September 25, 1919. Previously, he also served in the American Navy during the Spanish-American War: then, however, the ship bore a different name.

It is worth saying that the Pentagon is now actively implementing another large-scale program designed to increase the landing capabilities of the Navy. This is a universal amphibious assault ship (UDK) type America, designed to change the UDK type Wasp.
