WASHINGTON, (BM) – Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) can hit virtually any point on our planet, learned citing US magazine the National Interest.

American experts noted that Russia inherited from the Soviet Union an extensive collection of missiles, which the country currently continues to keep up to date, as well as modernize. Moscow in its concept of global deterrence of opponents has relied on this trump card and is not going to abandon it.

“Russia is moving towards the modernization of its arsenal of ballistic and cruise missiles, the country is a world leader in the development and production of missile weapons. Special attention should be paid to long-range ICBMs that can reach the United States,” the authors of The National Interest note.

Russia has several missile systems with a range of several thousand kilometers. The last modernized version of the R-36M missile system, known in the West as the “Satan”, was adopted shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1988. Compared with his predecessor, he received better protection against interception, this was achieved due to more advanced warheads, baits.

“Despite the fearsome name, Satan is gradually preparing for a well-deserved retirement. The number of these missiles in the Russian arsenals is decreasing, while their flight range of 11 thousand kilometers is still impressive,” experts from the United States report.

R-36M should replace a more modern complex, called RS-28 “Sarmat”. It is assumed that in the very near future it will be adopted by the Russian army. One of the features of this system is its high payload of up to 10 thousand kilograms. The complex can be armed with both nuclear and conventional warheads. However, the Sarmat’s flight range is most striking.

“RS-28 should become the most long-range Russian missile system, its range is estimated at 18 thousand kilometers. This is enough to cover the whole world,” analysts say.
