“According to the plan, the ship complex with the Zircon rocket should be put into service in 2022,” the source said.

He specified that tests of Zircon from the head frigate of project 22350 Admiral Gorshkov will be completed this year. The ship will hit both coastal targets and sea shields imitating enemy ships with a hypersonic missile.

In 2021, the source noted, test firing by Zircon from the head of the Project 885 multipurpose submarine (code “Ash”) “Severodvinsk” will take a place. “The first launch of the rocket from the submarine is planned to be carried out from the surface, the second – from under the water,” the source added.

The machine-building NGO (part of the Tactical Missile Arms Corporation), which, according to media reports, developed the Zircon missile, declined to comment on the information provided by the source.

Missile system “Zircon”

The plans for the creation of the Zircon hypersonic ship rocket were reported to the Ministry of Defense in 2011. Testing the rocket, according to media reports, began in 2015.

For the first time, it was launched from a ship in early January of this year (according to other sources, at the end of December 2019): the frigate Admiral Gorshkov fired Zircon at a distance of more than 500 km at a coastal target.

Russian President Vladimir Putin in a message to the Federal Assembly in February 2019 stated that the Zircon is capable of speeds of about 9 Machs and will be able to hit targets at a distance of more than 1 thousand km.

To launch the Zircon missiles, the universal ship firing complex (UKSK) 3S-14 is used. Such launchers, in particular, are equipped with frigates of project 22350, corvettes of project 20380, in the version for submarines – multi-purpose submarines of the Ash type.
