Iran and US unnaturally approach the war – Iranian politician

TEHRAN, (BM) – The war between the United States and Iran will become “unfair” to both countries, as it will be provoked by “outsiders.” This was stated by one of the most influential Iranian politicians, the deputy of the Mejlis (parliament) of Iran Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, broadcasts today on April 4, Radio Farda (Iranian subsidiary of the US government-funded Radio Liberty).

Falahatpisheh, who previously headed the parliamentary commission on national security and foreign policy, was known as a conservative politician, but in recent months he has taken a more moderate position – closer to the flank of Iranian reformers, whose leader is the current president of the Islamic Republic, Hassan Rouhani.

According to him, at present, “Iran and America are unnaturally close to war” and the main problem is that “they get information about each other indirectly, through third parties.” Falahatpisheh did not name the “outsiders” he mentioned, but Iranian politicians often accuse Israel and Saudi Arabia of fomenting tension between Tehran and Washington.

At the end of December 2019, Falahatpisheh called on the Iranian military and political leadership to “stay away from the conflict with the US in Iraq,” arguing that this could be a trap for Tehran. A few days later, as a result of a U.S. Air Force strike at Baghdad International Airport, Iranian military commander Kassem Suleimani was killed, Radio Farda notes.

As EADaily reported, on Wednesday, April 1, US President Donald Trump announced that “Iran or its proxies (in the Middle East region. – Ed.) Are planning a covert attack on American targets in Iraq.”

The United States deployed the first Patriot missile defense system in Iraq this week. One of the locations for Patriot batteries was the Ain al-Assad base, which was attacked by Iran earlier this year. Another battery arrived at Harir base in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan.

The United States is in the process of deploying systems to Iraq to “protect US forces in the event of a potential Iranian attack.” The head of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), General Kenneth Mackenzie, said this March 10 during a hearing in the Committee on Armed Forces of the House of Representatives of the US Congress. “We are in the process of delivering air defense systems, in particular, missile defense systems to Iraq, in order to protect ourselves from yet another potential Iranian attack,” the general of the American congressmen informed then.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on April 1 stating that the actions of the United States in Iraq lead to “catastrophic consequences” for the Americans themselves in the Middle East. At the same time, the Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic demanded that the United States respect the will of the people and government of Iraq and withdraw its troops from this country.

Since the beginning of the year, bases in Iraq where US troops have been deployed have undergone a series of missile attacks by pro-Iranian militias belonging to the predominantly Shiite People’s Mobilization Force (Hashd al-Shaabi) of the Arab Republic.
