Russian artillery received a new multiple launch rocket system

MOSCOW, (BM) – The artillery brigade deployed in Kaliningrad has received the Smerch division of ultra-long-range multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), learned citing Izvestia.

These guns can with particular accuracy hit the positions of medium-range missiles, as well as enemy defenses. Experts note that NATO’s air defense has no way to intercept the Tornadoes. Thus, the MLRS became a symmetrical response to the building up of the alliance’s power in the Baltic states and Eastern Europe.

More powerful than Grad

The Smerch multiple launch rocket systems entered service with the 244th separate Neman Red Banner Order of the Suvorov and Kutuzov Artillery Brigade at the end of last year. Now soldiers and officers are mastering new equipment, sources in the Ministry of Defense told Izvestia. These more powerful and long-range reactive systems replaced the MLRS BM-21 Grad.

Firing range of up to 120 km and the power of ammunition “Tornadoes” will reliably cover the Kaliningrad region. Their deployment in this region is quite justified, said Colonel Vladimir Anokhin, vice president of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems.

“All weapons systems in the MLRS reach zone that will be deployed against us in the territory of neighboring states can now be quickly destroyed,” the expert told Izvestia. – And the US missile defense in Poland will be useless, it will not reflect the blow of the new MLRS”.

Now in Poland, several tens of kilometers from the Russian border, two large NATO contingents are deployed. Since 2017, the multinational division Northeast has been formed in Elblag, where its headquarters and combat units are located. One of the four transnational alliance fighting groups created in 2016 to “contain Russia”, which is under US command, is housed in Ozhis.

In addition, a similar group under the command of the German military is stationed in the Lithuanian Rukla. Less than 80 km is separated from Russian territory by the main Polish naval base in Gdynia. Rocket ships and submarines, naval aviation are based there. Now, in the event of a military threat, these facilities may be under the gun of the new Russian MLRS.

The delivery to Kaliningrad of “Tornadoes” will protect the region from the encroachments of its neighbors. This is a serious system; neighboring countries are unlikely to have a desire to experience its work on themselves, Vladimir Anokhin emphasized.

Long-range “Tornado”

The artillery brigade, which received new equipment, is part of the 11th Army Corps of the Baltic Fleet coastal forces, created in 2016. Now it is being actively strengthened. Last year, 152-mm self-propelled artillery mounts (self-propelled guns) Msta-S entered service with the units. Replacing Grad with new MLRS will increase the brigade’s fire capabilities several times. For comparison: a volley of one Tornado combat vehicle strikes an area of ​​67 hectares at a range of 20 to 120 km. Grad covers an area of ​​4 hectares at a distance of up to 20 km, and with modernized missiles – up to 40 km.

For the combat deployment of the new complex, only three minutes are enough. Shooting can be conducted as single shells, or in one gulp, which takes only 38 seconds. The launch of shells is carried out from the cockpit of a combat vehicle or using an external remote control, which will allow the crew to open fire, hiding in a field shelter.

Just a minute after the shooting, the battery will be ready for the march, which will allow you to get away from the enemy artillery retaliation. Such capabilities are especially in demand in areas where the enemy is actively engaged in counter-battery combat.

Defense capabilities

“Tornado” is indispensable for defensive actions. It will destroy any target: from the accumulation of manpower to fortifications, airfields or air defense positions. In coastal areas, an MLRS precision strike will help to eliminate the accumulation of amphibious assault forces or the forces of an enemy who has already landed on shore.

For the MLRS developed a wide line of 300-mm rockets. In service are monoblock or cluster munitions with high-explosive, cumulative-fragmentation, thermobaric and other warheads. In particular, there are shells for anti-tank mining of the terrain. The quick installation of such a barrier will disrupt the enemy’s advance and make it possible to regroup their troops.

“Tornadoes” have long-range and high-precision shells, which allows them in some cases to replace operational-tactical missile systems on the battlefield. Such an adjustable missile with a high-explosive or high-explosive cluster cluster can hit targets at a distance of 120 km. They are used against the headquarters of the enemy.

Find drones, adjust fire and assess the damage from a fire attack “Tornado” will help drones. The Baltic Fleet and coastal forces have at their disposal drones Orlan-10 and Outpost. The latter has a substantial fuel supply and can operate in a radius of up to 250 km from the location of the base, develop a speed of more than 200 km / h and remain in the air for up to 17 hours. At Orlan-10, the flight range under the control of the operator is 120 km, and in standalone mode – up to 600 km.
