Russia starts testing individual elements of the S-500 missile system
MOSCOW, (BM) – Tests of individual elements of the new generation S-500 anti-aircraft missile system are being completed in the Russian Federation, said Vladimir Dolbenkov, director general of the Special Engineering Design Bureau, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing RIA Novosti.
“Also in the interests of the air defense missile defense troops, the company’s specialists created the units of the latest generation Triumfator-M mobile anti-aircraft missile system. Within the framework of this topic, tests were developed and completed for the anti-aircraft missile system units: launcher, components of the multifunctional radar and missile defense system, equipped chassis for the combat control point, transport units for the early warning radar system,” Dolbenkov said in an interview with Defense of Russia.
In June 2019, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said that phased tests of various elements of the S-500 anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) are being carried out with the launch of new missiles that have no analogues in the world.
Later, the Deputy Minister of Defense of Russia Alexei Krivoruchko said that in 2020 it is planned to begin preliminary tests of the entire system.
S-500 “Prometheus” (OKR “Triumfator-M”) refers to the new generation of ground-to-air air defense systems. It is a universal complex of long-range and high-altitude interception with increased missile defense potential and is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.
A promising system is capable of hitting not only ballistic, but also aerodynamic targets (planes, helicopters, other air targets), as well as cruise missiles.
According to open sources, the radius of the S-500 is about 600 kilometers. In addition, the system will be able to detect and simultaneously hit up to ten ballistic supersonic targets flying at a speed of up to 7 kilometers per second, and also be able to destroy warheads of hypersonic missiles.
In terms of its characteristics, the S-500 will significantly exceed the one in service with the S-400 and its American competitor Patriot Advanced Capability-3.
