A rocket attack in Tripoli; Airstrikes in Syria; US National Guard in 3 states

PANAGYURISHTE, (BM) – Your briefly report on March 23 in last twelve hours from BulgarianMilitary.com:

Libya: 1 killed, 2 injured in attack by Haftar forces

A rocket attack by forces of Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar on Sunday killed one person and also injured two children from the same family, said the country’s UN-recognized government, Anadolu Agency reports.

Haftar militia rockets hit a house in Ain Zara, south of the capital Tripoli, said a statement by the Volcano of Rage Operation, affiliated with the Government of National Accord (GNA).

Ahmed Al-Mismari, spokesman for the Haftar militias, yesterday welcomed a humanitarian cease-fire proposed by the UN and European countries over the coronavirus.

Haftar militias, however, continue their attacks.

Since the ouster of late ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, two seats of power have emerged in Libya: Haftar in eastern Libya, supported mainly by Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, and the GNA in Tripoli, which enjoys UN and international recognition.

The GNA has been under attack by Haftar’s forces since last April, with more than 1,000 people killed in the violence.

3 children among 6 killed in Syria regime airstrikes in Daraa

As many as six civilians, including three children, were killed as a result of Syrian regime airstrikes on the town of Jlen, in the western countryside of Daraa, Anadolu reported.

The agency quoted local sources as saying that the regime forces bombed the town after clashes with armed opposition groups who had kept their weapons after a truce signed with Russia.

The sources pointed out that the clashes began after Syrian regime forces targeted a car carrying opposition representatives from the town who were on their way to meet the regime reconciliation committee in protest against the latter’s violation of the ceasefire agreement and its efforts to control the town by force.

According to the sources, two opposition representatives were killed in the attack, while a third was wounded, prompting opposition fighters to launch an attack against Syrian regime forces stationed around their town.

Eight soldiers were killed as a result, the sources said, adding they responded by shelling the town killing six civilians, including three children.

Trump deploys National Guard to 3 states over COVID-19

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he has activated the National Guard to help New York, California and Washington state in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic, where more than 240 people alone have died from the disease.

“Today, I am announcing action to help New York, California and Washington ensure that the National Guard can effectively respond to this crisis,” Trump said at a news briefing at the White House.

He said the three states have been “hit the hardest,” adding: “We’re dealing also with other states.”

The president said the federal government will fund 100% of the cost of deploying national guard units to carry out approved missions to stop the virus.

The governors will be in command and the administration will be following them, said Trump, adding he spoke with the states’ leaders on the action and noted “they’re very happy with what we’re going to be doing.”

“This action would give them the maximum flexibility to use the Guard against the virus without having to worry about costs and liability,” he said. “And it frees up state resources to protect the health and safety of the people in their state.”

The president also said the federal government has deployed hundreds of tons of supplies from national stockpiles to locations “with the greatest need in order to assist in those areas.”
