Russian radar covers all Europe; Sanctions on Syrian defence minister

Russia’s advanced radar in Kaliningrad to monitor entire territory of Europe — source

Russia’s Konteiner new-generation over-the-horizon radar, capable of tracking launches of cruise and hypersonic missiles at the distance of up to 3,000 km, will be deployed in Russia’s Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad to cover the entire territory of Europe, including the United Kingdom, a defense industry source told TASS on Thursday.

The first Konteiner radar went on combat duty in the Volga area region of Mordovia on December 1, 2019.

“The second Konteiner radar will be deployed in the Kaliningrad region. Several potential sites are now being considered,” the source said.

He did not elaborate on when the radar will enter service, saying only that “the radar is planned to be deployed in the short-term perspective.”

“The second radar will complement the first one, which entered service in Mordovia, and will be capable of monitoring the entire territory of Europe, including the United Kingdom,” the source said. “Moreover, data coming from both stations will be combined to increase precision.”

US slaps sanctions on Syria defence minister for Idlib assault

The United States State Department yesterday slapped sanctions on Syria’s Defense Minister Imad Ali Abdullah Ayoub for his role in the violence and the disastrous humanitarian crisis in northern Syria.

In a statement, the official body said sanctions have been imposed under Executive Order 13894, as a result of Ayoub’s deliberate actions since December 2019 to prevent a ceasefire from taking hold in northern Syria.

“This obstruction resulted in almost a million people being displaced and in dire need of humanitarian aid in the midst of a cold winter in Idlib,” the statement said.

Executive Order 13894 targets those responsible for, complicit in, or who have directly or indirectly engaged in, or attempted to engage in, or financed, the obstruction, disruption, or prevention of a ceasefire in northern Syria.

The Russian-backed Syrian regime launched military offensives in December 2019 in its northwestern province of Idlib, the last stronghold of the Syrian opposition which is supported by Turkey.
