Russia develops and works the ‘Husky’ project – fifth-generation submarines

MOSCOW, (BM) – Russia is busy building fourth-generation submarines, but is also developing fifth-generation submarines, said Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Izvestia.

“We must look forward. This is the time requirement necessary for the further development of the fleet. Therefore, it is no secret that work is underway to create nuclear submarines of the 5th generation. They will be even more perfect in all their characteristics,” said the admiral.

Evmenov also said that attention is paid to the development of all fleets. So, over the past 10 years, the renewal of the underwater component of the Black Sea Fleet has been fully completed.

Russian Black Sea fleet received six diesel-electric submarines of project 636.3.

At the same time, the submarine forces of the Northern and Pacific fleets are being strengthened.

In 2020, the Navy intends to obtain from the United Shipbuilding Corporation the leading submarine cruisers “Prince Vladimir”, “Kazan”, as well as the first serial nuclear submarines “Prince Oleg” and “Novosibirsk”.

Evmenov emphasized that the submarine fleet is a guarantee of deterring the threats that may come from the sea and ocean. In this regard, the Ministry of Defense is doing everything to be able to fend off them.

In December, American experts ranked the five most powerful navies in the world. Russia took second place.

The Husky project

There is relatively little information on the specific nature of the Husky project submarines in the open press, and so far it is only possible to judge the many features of this type of nuclear submarines.

In particular, it is planned that the underwater displacement of the Husky submarine will be about 12-13 thousand tons, the boats will have a two-hull structure, and the crew of the submarine will be about 90 people. The size of the submarines of this project will be smaller than the currently built submarines of project 885M Yasen. It is believed that this should have a positive effect on the maneuverability and secrecy of the new generation nuclear submarines.

According to one source, Husky is being developed in two versions. The anti-submarine version will be equipped with Caliber anti-ship missiles.

This modification of the missile system is designed to destroy the submarines of a potential enemy. First of all – strategic missile submarines of the strategic type Columbia (USA) and Wangard (Great Britain).

The second version of the “Husky” will be armed with anti-ship hypersonic cruise missiles “Zircon” and is intended to destroy large surface ships – nuclear strike aircraft carriers, cruisers and destroyers of the URO, universal landing ships, etc.

Submarines will have even less noise than the fourth generation nuclear submarines. The hull of the boat will consist of composite materials. Moreover, bow and stern rudders, stabilizers, wheelhouse guards and even propellers and shaft lines will be made of these materials. It is assumed that such structures will reduce the reflection of enemy sonar signals and reduce the total mass of the ship.

According to some reports, the 5th generation submarines will not receive a water-water reactor, but a fundamentally new main power plant. It is hypothesized that it will constitute a further development of the reactor previously installed on the Lira Project 705 (705K) nuclear multipurpose submarines.

Of paramount importance for the Husky nuclear submarines are the latest underwater detection tools. The main thing at the same time is the achievement of increasingly distant underwater vision distances, increasing the accuracy of determining coordinates and the reliability of target classification. Otherwise, to prevail in an armed confrontation with the submarines of a probable enemy in the depths of the oceans is extremely problematic.

“There is no doubt that domestic shipbuilders intend to get a highly maneuverable, high-speed, relatively small displacement submarine with a significant reduction in the number of crews, with the introduction of new effective types of weapons and technical means, using integrated automation. One of the main tasks in this case is to reduce the underwater noise level of the submarine several times in comparison with the boats of the previous construction,” Deputy Director of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies Konstantin Makienko said.

According to the expert, if during the construction of the Husky nuclear submarine the modular-aggregate method of creating a ship is used, mastering this approach is, without exaggeration, a matter of the subsequent development of domestic submarine building.
