COVID-19 – Norway and Finland canceled maneuvers, and this is only the beginning
MOSCOW, (BM) – Mankind finally has a common enemy. Is it time to forget about the feuds of East and West and move on to joint military action against the adversary, known as COVID 19, which threatens the whole world.
In Brussels, they do not hide the fact that one of the staff at NATO headquarters is infected, there may be others. General Christopher Cavoli, Commander of the US Ground Forces in Europe, and a number of his assistants are placed under house quarantine for the same reason and “perform their duties remotely.” The Pentagon has postponed command post exercises in South Korea, where a high prevalence of coronavirus is recorded.
As a result of the test, the coronavirus was found in the chief of the Italian General Staff, Salvator Farina. The general is prescribed treatment. And he will remain in quarantine in his house, and his official duties will be performed by another person. Tehran reports on the hospitalization of the head of the Organization for Emergencies of Iran, Ismail Najar.
The Iranian agency Tasnim reported the death of General Farzad Tazari, the former deputy head of the political affairs department of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC, elite units of the Armed Forces of Iran). More than a thousand soldiers and officers of the country’s defense army (IDF) were quarantined in Israel.
According to the Israeli agency Walla, “IDF soldiers who returned from overseas leave or contacted confirmed coronavirus carriers in the country were placed under quarantine.”
The Finnish military will not take part in NATO maneuvers, which are supposed to take place from March 9 to 19 in the territory of neighboring Norway, in the Troms region. The reason for this was the epidemic of coronavirus.
“The participation of the Finnish Armed Forces in the Cold Response exercises conducted by the Norwegian armed forces … was canceled due to the situation with the coronavirus,” the Finnish Defense Ministry said in an official statement. It is reported that up to 15 thousand military personnel of the armies of ten countries should take part in the exercises as planned. From Finland, 400 soldiers were supposed to go to a neighboring country, but, as they say, a person assumes, and God disposes.
At the beginning of this week, Norway called on its NATO allies to carefully check all soldiers who were to take part in the above maneuvers for the presence of a coronavirus in order to prevent a potential large-scale epidemic in NATO forces.
But, most interestingly, it was in the Norwegian army that about 1300 people were found infected with coronavirus, all the sick were quarantined at the Skold base, located in the Troms region. The personnel in this base are expected to skip the Cold Response exercises. US military personnel stationed in Europe, from the composition who is going to participate in the exercises, also suffered from coronavirus.
The armed forces of most NATO countries are preparing to fight the epidemic, the Department of Defense of the United States and Canada have already reported this.
The strongest epidemic that seized the troops of North Korea is noted. The South Korean online news newspaper Daily NK, writing about the events north of the 38th parallel, said, citing its source, that a report was prepared by the North Korean armed forces on the impact of COVID 19 on the country’s soldiers.
It states that about 180 soldiers died in January and February, and that approximately 3,700 soldiers are currently in quarantine. According to the report, the dead soldiers were mainly located on or near the Sino-North Korean border in the provinces of North Pyongang, Chagang, Ryangang and North Hamgyon.
