Russia: Turkey has no authority to determine the fate of Syria

MOSCOW, (BM) – The Turkish authorities have no authority to determine the fate of Syria. This opinion was expressed by RIA Novosti, the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs Dmitry Novikov in response to the offer of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to leave Ankara “face to face” with Damascus, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.

“As for Erdogan’s claims to determine the fate of Syria, the Turkish leadership has no authority for this. These powers were not granted by the Syrian authorities, these powers are not supported by any decisions of the UN,” Novikov said.

According to him, at present the Turkish leadership is trying to get a monopoly on interference in Syria’s internal political affairs and spontaneously begin to dictate its will to other states. Such actions, Novikov believes, are absolutely unacceptable.

Earlier on February 29, the Turkish president said that in a conversation with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, he suggested that Moscow not interfere in the confrontation between Ankara and Damascus. He also asked the Russian leader if Russia was going to create a military base in Syria.

A telephone conversation between the leaders of the two countries took place on February 28. In particular, the parties discussed the need to increase the effectiveness of coordination through the channels of the Russian and Turkish defense ministries in the context of an escalation of the conflict in Syrian Idlib. The issues of combating terrorism were also discussed.
