Here are the reasons why NATO cannot help Turkey in Syria
PANAGYURISHTE, (BM) – The situation in Syria has changed dramatically over the past 12 hours as Syrian air forces backed by Russian air forces fire a Turkish convoy in Idlib province, as we reports at last 12 hours.
As a result of this attack, dozens of Turkish soldiers died and Erdogan promised no longer to stop Syrian refugees from targeting Europe and open Turkish borders for them.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan talks with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and convenes an extraordinary meeting of the National Security Council.
As Turkey is an ally and member of NATO, many people expect the NATO member states and the alliance itself to respond to what is happening in Syria. Unfortunately, this cannot happen, as few people know, Russia and Syria have not breached a point of international agreements.
Amanda Sloat of Brookings Institution reminded that everything is happening on Syrian territory and even with Russia attacking the Turkish army there, Ankara can only seek NATO consultations under Article 4 of the Washington Treaty, as it did after the downing of a Russian plane back in 2015.
Article 5 on the collective defense of member states can only be triggered if the attack is against forces, objects, ships or aircraft in the territory of Turkey, she adds.
