Warning signals about a possible rocket fire sounded in Ashkelon and a number of border areas in southern Israel. Due to shelling, Ashkelon City Hall canceled school hours on Monday, February 24th.

According to the Israeli military, the Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted 13 of the 21 missiles.

Later, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group (banned in the Russian Federation) claimed responsibility for shelling Israeli territories. Representatives of the organization said that this was a response to “the murder of Mujahideen Muhammad al-Nayim and the abuse of his body.”

On January 17, the Israeli military attacked objects of the Hamas movement, recognized as a terrorist organization in several Western countries, in the Gaza Strip in response to the launch of balloons with explosives. A helicopter from the Israel Defense Forces hit the infrastructure used by the Hamas movement in the north of Gaza.

The Israeli military says it has begun conducting airstrikes on Palestinian Islamic Jihad sites in the Gaza Strip in response to multiple barrages of rockets fired at southern Israel throughout the evening.

Shortly after the Israeli counter-attack began, sirens again sounded in the town of Sderot and surrounding communities, sending thousands of people rushing to bomb shelters.

Later the Israeli military says one of its aircraft targeted a group of Palestinian Islamic Jihad members preparing to launch rockets from northern Gaza.

“A hit was confirmed,” the IDF says.

There are no immediate Palestinian reports on the casualties.
