According to the newspaper, the Russian military concentrated most of their attacks in the area of Jisr al-Shugur, which is controlled by the terrorist organization Hayat Tahrir Ash-Sham (created on the basis of the banned Russia’s Jabhat al-Nusra) and the Turkestan Islamic Party.

The attack occurred after militants shot down two Syrian helicopters earlier in February.

“Since the Syrian military already controls the Aleppo-Damascus (M-5) highway, it seems that their high command and Russian colleagues are now focused on capturing the last areas along the Aleppo-Latakia highway, which are still controlled by jihadists,” the newspaper writes.

On February 16, it became known that the Russian military police began to establish control over the M5 highway, which passes through all of Syria. It connects Aleppo in the north with the cities of Hama, Homs and Damascus, and in the south reaches the province of Deraa and the border with Jordan. The road allows the military to quickly transfer equipment and deliver supplies.

Earlier, on February 11 and 14, militants shot down two Syrian Air Force helicopters. This happened in the provinces of Idlib and Aleppo.

The Syrian army is conducting a large-scale operation against militants in Idlib, despite a ceasefire initiated by Russia and Turkey. Government forces managed to move deeper into the province and occupy several key settlements along the way to the capital of the region, including Sarakib, captured by rebels in November 2012.
