War in Syria: US Apache vs. Russian Mi-8 and more news in brief

ANKARA, (BM) – In Syrian Idlib, Assad regime forces reached the M-5 highway, which connects Aleppo with the capital Damascus. The regime also threatens to attack Maarat al-Numan. And east of the Euphrates, after American forces blocked the way for Russian forces last week, tensions between the military units of the two countries increased.

In two separate regions of Syria, each of which Turkey is particularly sensitive to, important events are taking place. The night before, the forces of the Syrian regime and Russia, which for several weeks continued attacks in the province of Idlib, surrounded the strategically important Maarat al-Numan and took control of an important part of the M-5 highway between this city and Serakib. And in the east of the Euphrates, where the source of peace operation is located, Russia and the United States, aimed at establishing dominance over the oil regions, have already clashed not only with the ground, but also with the air forces.

It is alleged that after the capture of villages on the outskirts of Maarat al-Numan in the south of Idlib, the forces of the Syrian regime can enter this city at any time. It is reported that Assad’s forces began to surround Maarat al-Numan, and a small number of civilians remaining in the area began to flee towards the Turkish border. As a result of the encirclement of the regime, Maarat al-Numan was completely cut off from the city of Serakib, located northeast of it. It is noted that Assad’s forces took control of the granaries belonging to Marat al-Numan. While Russian military aircraft launched heavy strikes against Serakib and the village south of it, Kafar Nabah, areas in the western rural areas of Aleppo such as Kafar Hamra, Al Mansoura, Rashidin, Khan al-Asal and Kafar -Naha, too, have become the target of the forces of the regime and the Russian military aviation.

US competition – Russia

And the east of the Euphrates, where the zone of operation “Source of Peace” is located, for some time becomes the scene of the confrontation between the two superpowers. Last week, on the M-4 highway, near Tel Tamra, the US military stopped a Russian patrol heading for Kamyshly. And yesterday, the two countries exchanged signals using their air forces. After the United States sent Apache helicopters to the region, Russia, also sending its Mi-8 helicopters, threatened Washington.

Security expert Abdullah Ağar commented on these events in an interview with Hyuriet: “The two countries are fighting each other for a terrorist organization, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) / Democratic Union Party (PYD) and the dominance of the region’s oil fields . However, Russia’s advantage is that it was invited to Syria by Assad. In other words, Russia is officially in Syria. And the US presence is not such. We must not forget that militias supported by Iran also operate in the region, not so long ago they encountered the PKK / PYD. So the region can become an even more dangerous platform, where all players come together face to face, including two superpowers. ”

Two ministers discussed Idlib

On the other hand, yesterday, January 27, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt авavuşoğlu and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov held telephone conversations. It is reported that the ministers discussed the situation in Syria, in particular in Idlib.
