Canadian, US military to conduct observation flight over Russia

A joint mission by Canada and the United States will perform an observation flight between January 27 and February 1, chief of the Russian National Centre for Nuclear Risk Reduction Sergei Ryzhkov told reporters on Monday.

“Between January 27 and February 1 in the framework of implementing the international Treaty on Open Skies, a joint mission of Canada and the United States will conduct an observation flight over Russia on a Canadian C-13OJ observation aircraft. During the flight that will follow the agreed route, Russian specialists onboard the jet will monitor that the agreed parameters of the flight are strictly adhered to and that observation equipment allowed by the treaty is used,” he said.

North Korea urges citizens to ‘break through barriers’ as nuclear standoff continues

While a North Korean deadline for the United States to soften its stand on denuclearisation talks passed uneventfully over the New Year, state media and propaganda efforts have been focussing on the prospect of a long confrontation with the United States.

Optimism that two years of contacts between leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump would usher in a new age, and related hopes for economic improvement after decades of deprivation, appear to have faded.

Instead, the government has been hard at work in recent weeks using state media, propaganda posters, and performances to warn the public of a bumpy road ahead under U.S. and international pressure.

The propaganda effort has included calls for North Koreans to “break through barriers” and strengthen the country.

The weekend’s Lunar New Year celebrations included a concert for Kim and other dignitaries with tributes to the country’s leaders for overcoming adversity.

It is a familiar message for North Koreans, but one that now underscores that the leadership does not foresee a breakthrough in diplomacy any time soon.

“The message will be that because of the U.S. hostile policy and sanctions, that things will be more difficult for the foreseeable future,” said Andray Abrahamian, a visiting scholar with George Mason University Korea.

Lebanon: Security forces fire water cannons at protesters

Lebanese security forces fired water cannons and tear gas at anti-government protesters trying to breach a security barricade outside government headquarters in central Beirut, as reported by Reuters.

Some protesters among the hundreds who had gathered for a planned march managed to open a metal gate blocking their way but were pushed back.

After Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces used Twitter to warn peaceful demonstrators to leave for their own safety, riot police fanned out to disperse dozens of remaining protesters.

“We want the demonstrations to be peaceful so they can prevail,” said Abdo Saadeh, criticising a government formed this week as a “masquerade” by a political elite that protesters blame for driving the country towards collapse.

Hezbollah and its allies formed a cabinet of technocrats nominated by their parties under Prime Minister Hassan Diab, who was tapped for the job after protests forced former premier Saad Al-Hariri to resign on 29 October.

“We came here today because there is no trust in this government,” Saadeh said. “They brought their cronies, their consultants.”
