New try of Croatia to buy new or second hand fighter jets

ZAGREB, (BM) – Croatia is making another attempt to renew its fighter fleet, learned Yesterday, January 20, the Croatian Ministry of Defense officially announced a new tender for the purchase of military aircraft.

In 2018, Croatia held a tender, the winner of which was the used F-16 Barak fighter from the Israeli Air Force. This deal fell through due to the fact that the United States did not give its consent to the transfer of “aircraft with Israeli equipment.”

The new tender will be very similar to the previous one. The USA can offer new F-16s, Sweden – new Gripen. Croatia waitng from Greece, Israel and Norway an offer for used F-16s. In addition, Italy received an proposal to participate to the tender and probably will offer used Eurofighter, and France with thier own Rafale.

This is the third attempt by the Croatian army to renew the composition of its combat aircraft. In 2006, the Croatian Ministry of Defense announced a tender for the purchase of fighters, but two years later it was canceled due to lack of funds. Today, the Croatian Air Force includes a little more than a dozen combat-ready MiG-21 fighters of various modifications (including combat training).
