Russian air strikes in Syria; India launched ballistic missile; Israel increases military budget

PANAGYURISHTE, (BM) – Your briefly report on January 20 in last six hours from BulgarianMilitary.com:

Russian air strikes kill 5 civilians in Idlib, Syria

Russian forces carried out air strikes in Idlib, a de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria, killing at least five civilians, local sources said on Monday.

According to the Syrian opposition aircraft observatory, Russian warplanes targeted the rural areas of the northwestern Aleppo province in the morning.

The attack killed at least five people and injuring nine others, said the White Helmets, a local civil defense agency.

Turkey has pushed hard for a cease-fire in Idlib after the region endured months of battering by forces loyal to the Bashar al-Assad regime and its allies, sending about a million civilian refugees flocking towards the Turkish border.

Turkey and Russia agreed in September 2018 to turn Idlib into a de-escalation zone in which acts of aggression are expressly prohibited.

Since then, more than 1,300 civilians there have been killed in attacks by the regime and Russian forces as the cease-fire continued to be violated.

Over one million Syrians have moved near the Turkish border due to intense attacks over the last year.

India successfully test-fires nuclear-capable K-4 ballistic missile off AP coast

Further strengthening its capabilities to hit enemy targets from submarines, India on Sunday successfully test-fired the 3,500 km strike range nuclear-capable K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missile off the coast of Andhra Pradesh.

The test-firing was carried out from an underwater platform in the sea during the daytime, said government sources.

The missile is being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for being deployed on the fleet of the Arihant Class nuclear submarines being built by India.

India is expected to carry out more tests of the missile before it is ready for being equipped on the nuclear submarines. At the moment, only the first nuclear boat INS Arihant is operational for the Navy.

K-4 is one of the two underwater missiles that are being developed by India for its submarine force.

IDF to receive $578M for protection against rockets, air defense

Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon and IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kohavi agreed that the IDF will receive an additional NIS 2 billion in order to kick start the military’s Momentum multi-year defense plan.

The amount was reportedly agreed upon Sunday after Kahlon, Kohavi, Defense Minister Naftali Bennett and Deputy Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir met with Accountant General Roni Hezkiah.

The new multi-year plan, which is built on the IDF’s new victory concept, uses the motto “readiness and change” and focuses on improving the military’s defensive and offensive capabilities.

As part of the plan, the military will invest significant amounts to close the gaps in several key areas including weapons and manpower as well as increasing the intelligence directorate’s ability to detect enemy forces in urban areas. The military will also focus on improving offensive capabilities of all corps against decentralized enemy troops which requires more offensive platforms and weapons.

As such, the military will procure a significant amount of precision guided missiles and mid-sized drones as well as additional air defense batteries.
