A fierce attack by Haftar’s forces in Tripoli; Syrian soldiers in Libya

PANAGYURISHTE, (BM) – Your briefly report on January 2 in last six hours from BulgarianMilitary.com:

Tripoli repels attack by Haftar forces in Libya

Forces of Libya’s UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) on Thursday said it repelled a fierce attack by rival Khalifa Haftar forces as fresh clashes hit southern Tripoli.

In April, Haftar’s forces launched a military campaign to capture the capital Tripoli from the internationally recognized government.

GNA military spokesman Mostafa al-Majai said in a statement that their forces repulsed air and ground attacks from the Haftar forces.

He stressed that GNA forces regained control of the Al-Tekbali military camp in the Saladin area.

Since the ouster and death of ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, two seats of power have emerged in Libya: one in eastern Libya supported mainly by Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, and the GNA in Tripoli, which enjoys UN and international recognition.

Turkey may send allied Syrian fighters to Libya – sources

Turkey is considering sending allied Syrian fighters to Libya as part of planned military support for the besieged government in Tripoli, senior Turkish sources said on Monday, potentially bringing more foreign influence into the complex conflict.

President Tayyip Erdogan said last week Turkey would deploy troops to Libya after Fayez al-Serraj’s internationally-recognised government requested support to fend off an offensive by General Khalifa Haftar’s eastern forces.

The move is meant to protect Turkish private investment in Libya and bolster its energy claims in the Mediterranean, but could also put Ankara at odds with other foreign players in the war.

Two senior Turkish government officials and two security officials, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said Ankara had not yet deployed any Syrian fighters to Libya.

“But evaluations are being made and meetings are being held on this issue, and there is a tendency to go in this direction,” said one official, adding no decision had been made on numbers.
