The United States will supply Ukraine with a second batch of Javelin man-portable anti-tank missile systems, Deputy Defense Minister of Ukraine Anatoly Petrenko said during a briefing on state defense orders and military procurement for the needs of the Ukrainian army.
In addition, the Ukrainian army ordered similar missile systems of its own production, as well as artillery reconnaissance stations, about 100 armored vehicles and several aircraft.
“We continue to move towards providing troops with electronic warfare and electronic intelligence stations,” the military said.

Javelin – American man-portable anti-tank missile system, designed to destroy armored vehicles and low-flying low-speed targets (helicopters, drones, landing helicopters).
The weapon was successfully used during the Iraq war and a number of other armed conflicts. The cost of one complex, complete with six missiles, ranges from $ 600 thousand for the United States and allies, and up to $ 1.4 million for export.
Three days earlier it became known that the White House ordered to suspend the provision of military assistance to Ukraine about an hour and a half after a telephone conversation between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky.
This was reported by the American television channel CNN, referring to documents and emails that were published by the non-profit organization Center for Public Integrity.
From the published materials it became known that the American leader became interested in the issue of providing military assistance to Kiev on June 19. This happened after he read The Washington Examiner, which stated that the Pentagon intends to continue to support Ukraine.
On behalf of Trump, the representative of the US Department of Budget and Administration, Michael Duffy, sent a request to the military department so that the ministry would provide more detailed information about financing, Bloomberg writes.
On Saturday, December 21, The Washington Post (WP), citing sources, reported that representatives of the head’s administration forced the Democrats from the House of Representatives to remove the requirement for immediate military assistance to Ukraine, which was contained in a package of bills on financing the work of the government.
According to the newspaper, the Democrats wanted to include a clause in the bill that obliged the country’s authorities to allocate $ 250 million to Ukraine within 45 days after signing the budget. Politicians thus wanted to prevent the White House from freezing funds. However, they subsequently abandoned this wording.
Last week, members of the House of Representatives and Senate of the American Congress agreed on the state’s defense budget for 2020 in the amount of $ 738 billion. The corresponding document was published by the relevant committee of the House of Representatives.
Among other things, it is proposed to increase $ 734.4 million in spending on the so-called European containment initiative – a program designed to “counter aggression from Russia in the region”
by “restoring the advanced American military presence” on the European continent and building up the military capabilities of partners.
For military assistance to Ukraine, which includes, in particular, the supply of cruise missiles for the coastal defense system and anti-ship missiles, it is planned to allocate $ 300 million, which is $ 50 million more than was budgeted for 2019.
Over the past five years, the United States has allocated Ukraine more than $ 1.3 billion for the development of the army, said Pentagon spokesman Eric Pachon.
According to him, these funds were allocated to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Ukrainian troops and improve interaction with NATO. Washington supports Kiev in an effort to join the alliance, but for this it is necessary to resolve territorial differences in Crimea.
Last month, US Department of State head Mike Pompeo stated bluntly that Washington had organized arms transfers to Kiev so that Ukraine could successfully fight against Russia. According to him, the initiative for the military supply of Ukraine belonged personally to the head of the White House.
The first batch of Javelin, the American authorities transferred to Kiev in March 2018. It included 37 launchers and more than 200 missiles to them. The Pentagon’s main military assistance program for Kiev is called the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative and is estimated at $ 250 million.
Earlier, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, drew attention to the fact that Ukraine needs to first overcome the internal crisis in the country. Moreover, it is worth doing this with the least losses both for the country’s economy and in the number of people. In this regard, the diplomat pointed out that the acquisition of American weapons is unlikely to help Kiev in solving these problems.
