Russian Su-24 front-line bombers simulated an attack on a USS in the Black Sea
KYIV, (BM) – Two Russian aircraft conducted maneuvers in the air near the destroyer Ross (USS Ross, DDG 71) of the US Navy class Arleigh Burke, which recently entered the Black Sea and sailed to the port of Odessa, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
The event took place on December 23, the next day, an American warship arrived safely at its destination. This was reported by the Ukrainian military department.
From the data received in the Ukrainian press on Tuesday, it is known that Russian combat aircraft participated in the simulation of the attack: a Su-24 front-line bomber accompanied by a Su-27 (or Su-30) fighter.
Since 2014, the destroyer Ross has been a frequent guest in Odessa. In 2016, this ship, together with another destroyer Whidbey Island (Whidbey Island) took part in the international naval exercises “Sea Breeze-2016”.
This year, this is the eighth entry of US Navy ships into the Black Sea. Before this incident, the Porter destroyer (Porter, DDG 78) visited here in October. Which during his visit conducted tripartite exercises with Ukraine and Romania, and also visited Odessa and Batumi.
Vice Admiral Lisa M. Franchetti, commander of the 6th US fleet, told the media that “throughout the current year, ships of the 6th US fleet were present in the Black Sea to support America’s regional partners and allies.” The visit of the Ross destroyer, according to Lisa Franchetti, demonstrates “the US’s continued commitment to maritime security and stability.”
This destroyer is based in the port of Rota, Spain, where the naval base of the 6th fleet of the US Navy is located. Warships from the composition of this American naval association enter the Black Sea in accordance with the provisions of the Montreux Convention.

The command of the 6th fleet is located in Naples (Italy). The destroyer Ross has a displacement of 8775 metric tons, a length of about 154 m, and has a top speed of 32 knots. The number of its crew is 337 people (23 of them are officers).
The ship is armed with Aegis launchers, 29 launchers in the bow and 61 launchers in the aft, with Tomahawk cruise missiles or Standard-2 anti-aircraft and anti-ship missiles. In addition, it is equipped with artillery and torpedo launchers, a system for setting mine-explosive barriers.
