Russian Black Sea Fleet corvette, coastal defense troops destroy enemy warship in drills

The crew of the missile corvette Orekhovo-Zuyevo and the teams of Bal and Bastion coastal defense systems destroyed a notional enemy’s warship in Black Sea drills, the press office of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet reported on Tuesday.

“The Black Sea Fleet held the joint drills of naval forces and coastal defense anti-ship missile systems to repel a notional enemy’s strike and eliminate its surface ship. The drills involved the crew of the small missile ship Orekhovo-Zuyevo and the combat teams of Bal and Bastion coastal defense anti-ship missile systems,” the Fleet’s press office said in a statement.

Under the drills’ scenario, the corvette Orekhovo-Zuyevo detected a notional enemy’s warship, which was capable of delivering missile strikes against the Black Sea Fleet’s infrastructural facilities. During the training exercise, the enemy warship notionally fired cruise missiles towards the coastline. The personnel of the Orekhovo-Zuyevo’s air defense combat posts employed anti-aircraft artillery and intercepted the missiles while the Bal and Bastion combat teams destroyed the notional enemy’s warship.

Taliban kill 15 in attack on Afghan security checkpoint – local officials

Taliban militants ambushed a government checkpoint in Balkh province in Afghanistan’s north, killing at least 15 members of the security forces, local officials said on Tuesday, the latest in an escalating series of insurgent attacks.

More than 18 years after U.S.-led forces toppled the hardline Taliban regime, Afghan forces are suffering record casualties with Afghan and U.S. officials warning that the toll is not sustainable.

Despite a winter lull in fighting due to heavy snowfall in the mountains where the Islamist Taliban typically rest and regroup ahead of their annual spring offensive, assaults on vulnerable security checkpoints continue across the country.

Mohammad Yousuf, the district governor of Dawlatabad where the incident took place said, said dozens of Taliban insurgents targeted a checkpoint manned jointly by Afghan soldiers and intelligence agents, killing 15.

Assad’s regime, Russia escalate attacks in Idlib, Erdogan warns

Several cities and towns in the southern and eastern countryside of Idlib have been subjected to a series of raids carried out by aircraft of the Syrian regime and Russia, coinciding with widespread attacks against populated villages and areas.

The rapid field developments in the Idlib Governorate, northwest of Syria, confirm that Moscow dropped from its calculations the Sochi understanding it had concluded with Ankara about Idlib and its surrounding area, last year and that it is continuing the military option in this region.

While the fighting is still ongoing in Idlib, Ankara announced that a Turkish delegation will visit Moscow on Monday to discuss the situation in Idlib, at a time when Turkey talked about the arrival of thousands of refugees on its lands during the past days.
