Another threat comes from inside the Bundeswehr

LONDON, (BM) – Modern political arena brings the world a lot of tension. The rising heat from the East, Brexit, Immigrants, terrorist attacks. It is all such a stress for everyone. No wonder the tension is getting closer to the top point.

This is when the army and the law enforcement have to keep their ears to the ground and be prepared for any outcome. As for the member states of NATO it is very important to keep the blood pumping, but that is just not what all members have in common.

The Bundeswehr, for example, not only has problems with its naval helicopters but apparently with the discipline as well. In 2019, around 1000 disciplinary sanctions were imposed on Bundeswehr soldiers – because of bad behavior.

The “Bild” newspaper referring to the Federal Ministry of Defense that most of the time, these sanctions have been imposed for violating the ban on alcohol products and for the cases related with being late for duty. A spokesman for the ministry told the newspaper that 60 officers and 300 NCOs are among those evildoers.

Also recent events show that the mood among the Bundeswehr staff is rather complex. A Special Forces officer (KSK) is being investigated on a suspicions of right-wing extremist activities.

Because information had come to the public, now necessary employment measures against the soldier had been openly initiated, said a ministry spokesman of the Bild am Sonntag. He must be removed as soon as possible from the KSK, and he must be banned from the army. According to the report, this should happen no later than next week. According to the newspaper, the sergeant was on duty several times in Afghanistan. What could possibly be the motive for this?

Two staff officers are being suspected of right-wing extremism as well. According to the newspaper Zeit they had shown the Hitler salute at a sergeant’s private celebration. One of them had been suspended a few weeks ago, the other was considered a “suspected case” by the MAD. According to the newspaper, the ministry also wants to file criminal charges against the unknown “for secret betrayal”.

It is not the first right-wing extremism accusations against soldiers of the Bundeswehr. Already the case of the officer Franco A. in April 2017 had triggered extensive investigations, because it was suspected that he could be part of a larger right-wing extremist group. For the elite unit KSK, whose tasks include the rescue and liberation of people from captivity, hostage taking or terrorist threat abroad, has also long been talked about right-wing extremist tendencies of individual members.

The Chief of the Military Shielding Service, Christof Gramm, had recently spoken of about 20 suspected cases at the KSK – a worrying figure for the relatively small unit. In the future, the MAD wants to focus more on those soldiers who have not yet crossed the threshold to right-wing extremism.

After becoming aware of a case of right-wing extremism in the elite KSK unit, the German Minister of Defense has announced internal investigations. Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer has the Special Forces command now investigate possible radical networks

“We will diligently investigate and also draw conclusions, and we will determine whether it is an isolated incident or a whole network behind it.”

Only a few days ago, the Ministry of Defense had to apologize for the fact that a photo with swastikas had been posted on the official Instagram account of the Bundeswehr.

It is not the first time Germany is questioned weather it’s ready to deploy its troops for defense missions. Bundeswehr had problems with vehicles and aircrafts. But this problem is much deeper and it will take some time to eradicate it.
