“Russia is continuously enhancing its operations underwater,” Lungescu said in an interview with German media group RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND), adding that this is especially true for the North Atlantic and the Norwegian Sea.

According to her, the Alliance will respond to this, among other things, with increased patrols. It is also planned to invest in modern technologies for the destruction of submarines from the air, RIA Novosti reports.

At the same time, Lungescu noted that the North Atlantic is still “vital for the security of Europe” with regard to military supply routes, civilian trade routes and communication channels.

According to RND, recently Russia has significantly improved its submarine fleet in terms of technology: the submarines have become much quieter. In addition, in the West they fear Russian submarine-launched missiles, which have also been improved.
