Lockheed has signed a contract to create a hypersonic missile totalling around $1 billion
WASHINGTON, (BM) – Lockheed Martin signed a contract to create a new hypersonic missile for the US Air Force, the contract amounted to 988.8 million dollars, learned BulgarianMiitary.com, according the Pentagon statement.
The creation of missile will be engaged in the California state of Orlando. Work is scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2022, RIA Novosti reports.
“Lockheed Martin received $ 988,832,126 as part of a change in the contractual terms of the previously awarded contract for Air-Based Rapid Response Weapons (ARRW),” the Pentagon said.
The company will have to design the structure, conduct tests and prepare the product for mass production.
In June, the U.S. Air Force conducted the first successful tests of a prototype AGM-183A (or ARRW) hypersonic missile. The missile was mounted on the external suspension of the strategic bomber B-52 Stratofortress.
In November, the head of the US Air Force Logistics Command, General Arnold Bunch, said the United States would have hypersonic weapons by 2022.
