She added that meetings with Russian and Turkish presidents Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan are needed in this regard.

She also called the preservation of NATO “Germany’s key interest”, even “more obvious” than during the Cold War, RIA Novosti reported.

“At least it’s as obvious as it was during the Cold War, that it’s our primary interest. Yesterday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Federal Republic of Germany, Heiko Maas) spoke about this: Europe cannot defend itself at the moment, it is dependent on the Transatlantic Union, and it is therefore true that we will work on this union and take more responsibility” Merkel said.

The German Chancellor added that it was necessary to “determine” what the Union should be specifically responsible for – whether it be defense tasks or security in the region.

Merkel also said that the development of European defense cooperation “should not be seen as a desire to work against NATO or instead of NATO”. In her view, this is a “remarkable development of the European Union component”.
