Without Russia and Turkey, a Political Solution to Syria is Impossible, Angela Merkel Said
BERLIN, (BM) – It is impossible to find a political solution in Syria without Russia and Turkey, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
“It is impossible without Russia, it is impossible without Turkey,” TASS reports.
She added that meetings with Russian and Turkish presidents Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan are needed in this regard.
She also called the preservation of NATO “Germany’s key interest”, even “more obvious” than during the Cold War, RIA Novosti reported.
“At least it’s as obvious as it was during the Cold War, that it’s our primary interest. Yesterday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Federal Republic of Germany, Heiko Maas) spoke about this: Europe cannot defend itself at the moment, it is dependent on the Transatlantic Union, and it is therefore true that we will work on this union and take more responsibility” Merkel said.
The German Chancellor added that it was necessary to “determine” what the Union should be specifically responsible for – whether it be defense tasks or security in the region.
Merkel also said that the development of European defense cooperation “should not be seen as a desire to work against NATO or instead of NATO”. In her view, this is a “remarkable development of the European Union component”.
Merkel and Putin regularly make phone calls. The latter took place on November 11, including the situation in Syria.
