Israeli strike in Gaza kills six civilians – medics, residents
An Israeli missile strike in the Gaza Strip killed six members of a Palestinian family on Thursday, all of them civilians, medical officials and residents said, bringing the death toll in the territory from a 48-hour surge in fighting to 32.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the pre-dawn incident in Deir al-Balah, which came as cross-border shelling exchanges continued despite a ceasefire offer by the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad.
Israel killed an Islamic Jihad field commander on Tuesday, sparking cross-border rocket salvoes by the militant group and further Israeli strikes. Medics said 32 Palestinians have been killed, at least a third of them civilians.
Those killed in Thursday’s attack on a home in Deir al-Balah included a woman and a child, medical officials said. Another 12 people were wounded, they said.
Russian airstrikes kill 3 civilians in Idlib, Syria
Three civilians were killed in Russian airstrikes on residential areas in the de-escalation zone of Idlib, Syria, the Syrian civil defense group White Helmets said on Wednesday, Anadolu reports.
The agency stated that three siblings were killed in the town of Kafar Sijnah.
According to the Syrian opposition’s aircraft observatory, Russian warplanes targeted Kafranbil in Kafar Roma and the villages Rakhaya and Bidhama.
The targeted areas fall within the de-escalation zone laid out in Turkey’s deal reached with Russia in late 2018.
Since then, over 1,300 civilians have been killed in attacks by the regime and Russian forces in the de-escalation zone.
Notably, about a million people have been forced to leave conflict-prone areas of the city and started taking shelter in safer areas in the northern part of the city bordering Turkey.
The Turkish government has followed an “open-door” policy for Syrians since the eruption of the bloody war.
There are over 3.6 million Syrians currently taking shelter in Turkey, many looking forward to one day returning home.
Rocket barrages hit central, southern Israel amid ceasefire efforts
Heavy rocket barrage were fired at cities in central Israel late Wednesday even as the IDF said it was striking targets in Gaza. Meanwhile, the UN and Egypt continued efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement and Islamic Jihad laid out its terms for such a truce.
Sirens were heard in Rehovot, Gedera and Yavne as well as in Ashdod further south shortly after 11pm. The Magen David Adom emergency service said it had so far not received any reports of injuries in the wake of the attacks.
“At this time, the IDF is renewing its attacks on Islamic Jihad targets in the Gaza Strip,” the military said at around the same time.
The wave of rockets came soon after barrages were fired at Ashkelon and Ashdod and Gaza border communities.
The Magen David Adom reported that no one was hurt as a result of the rockets. Police forces were called to a scene in Ashdod, where rocket shrapnel hit very close to a residential building. Iron Dome intercepted at least five rockets.
The current round of violence began early Tuesday, with a predawn Israeli strike in Gaza that killed Islamic Jihad commander Baha Abu al-Ata. The organization vowed revenge and while Hamas expressed its solidarity, by Wednesday night it had yet to engage in the fighting.
The rocket attacks on Israel followed soon after Abu al-Ata’s killing, and on Tuesday the south and large parts of the center of the country came close to a standstill as schools were closed and all non-essential workers were told to stay home or near a bomb shelter.
