Sirens sound across southern Israel as area bombarded by rockets

Dozens of rockets were fired out of Gaza at Israel early Tuesday morning, following an IDF operation that killed powerful Islamic Jihad terror commander Baha abu al-Ata.

Rocket sirens trilled repeatedly starting at 6 a.m. in towns near the Gaza border and as far away as Rishon Lezion, Gedera and Ashdod, according to the Israeli military. An Associated Press reporter said barrages of rockets could be heard being fired out of the Strip.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the attacks.

The Magen David Adom rescue service said one person was treated for anxiety and another suffered light injuries while running toward a bomb shelter.

Several missiles were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system.

The IDF urged residents of southern Israel to stay close to bomb shelters.

Israeli authorities had earlier ordered schools in areas near Gaza shuttered Tuesday and announced other precautions as they prepared for reprisal attacks following the assassination of al-Ata.

Attack in Damascus kills two, wounds six – state media

At least two people were killed and six wounded in an attack in the early hours of Tuesday that targeted a building in Damascus, the Syrian capital, state television said

The building, which state media identified as a civilian home, is located near the Lebanese embassy in Mezzah, a western district of the capital that is home to Damascus University and many foreign embassies

State media did not say who had carried out the attack.

Earlier, state media had said the Syrian army opened fire on “a hostile target” over Daraya, a suburb southwest of Damascus. Photos published by state news agency SANA showed damage to a two-storey building and debris strewn over cars.

In recent years, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria against its regional arch foe Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah group, which it calls the biggest threat to its borders.

Israel kills Islamic Jihad commander, rockets fired from Gaza

Israel killed a top commander from the Iranian-backed Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad in a rare targeted strike in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, accusing him of carrying out a series of cross-border attacks and planning more.

The slaying of Baha Abu Al-Atta in his home looked likely to pose a new challenge for Gaza’s ruling Hamas faction, which has mostly tried to maintain a truce with Israel since a 2014 war.

Israel casts rising Gaza tensions as part of wider regional struggle with arch-foe Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has cited such scenarios in trying to form a broad coalition government after two inconclusive elections this year.

Al-Atta’s wife was also killed in the blast that ripped through the building in Gaza City’s Shejaia district before dawn, Islamic Jihad said. Two other people were wounded.

Shortly after, Palestinian militants launched a salvo of rockets into Israel, setting off sirens as far as its port city of Ashdod, some 20 km (12.5 miles) away, witnesses said.
