Israel is Preparing for an Iranian Attack; Protesters Have Been Killed in Iraq; Russia Unveils Amphibious Ship
PANAGYURISHTE, (BM) – Your briefly report on October 29 in last twelve hours from BulgarianMilitary.com:
Israeli embassies said to ramp up security amid fears of Iranian attack
Israeli embassies have reportedly stepped up security and preparedness amid growing fears in Jerusalem that Iran was readying to launch a military strike on the Jewish state.
A report by the Kan public broadcaster Monday said that Tehran has been emboldened by its devastating attack on Saudi Arabian oil installations last month, and was plotting an attack against Israeli targets.
Kan said officials were concerned that Iran — now more “aggressive and creative” than before — might choose a target outside of Israel.
The report said several diplomatic missions have been placed on high alert, and have been instructed to take certain security precautions.
Israeli leaders in recent weeks have increasingly warned of a growing security threat from the Islamic Republic.
Iraqi security forces open fire on protesters, kill 14
Iraqi security forces killed at least 14 people in the Shi’ite holy city of Kerbala overnight after opening fire on protesters, medical and security sources said, in a return to tactics denounced by the government’s own internal inquiry.
At least 865 people were wounded, the sources said. Three protesters died in the southern city of Nassiriya from wounds sustained in earlier protests.
Kerbala’s health department chief however said 122 people were injured, including 66 members of the security forces.
Kerbala’s police chief denied in a statement that any protesters had been killed and said only one person had died in an unrelated criminal incident, calling footage of security forces shooting at protesters that went viral on social media fabricated and designed to “incite the street” in the city.
Thousands of Iraqis took to the streets this week in a second wave of protests against Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi’s government and a political elite they say are corrupt and out of touch. The total death toll since the unrest started on Oct. 1 is now at least 250 people.
The unrest, driven by discontent over economic hardship and deep-seated corruption, has broken nearly two years of relative stability in Iraq, which from 2003 to 2017 endured a foreign occupation, civil war and an Islamic State insurgency.
Baltic Fleet warship lands amphibious assault force onto coast in western Russia drills
The air-cushion small amphibious assault ship Yevgeny Kocheshkov practiced loading and unloading military hardware with personnel onto the sea coast in Russia’s westernmost Kaliningrad Region, the Baltic Fleet’s press office reported on Tuesday.
“As part of its planned deployment to the sea, the crew of the Baltic Fleet’s air-cushion small amphibious assault ship Yevgeny Kocheshkov practiced a tactical assignment to take military hardware on its board and land it onto the coast. The ship’s artillery provided fire support for the amphibious assault force’s landing,” the press office said in a statement.
During the drills, the ship’s crew fired artillery guns against the targets that simulated the notional enemy’s air attack weapons and coastal battery, the statement says.
After practicing the assignments of striking targets, the ship landed BTR-82A armored personnel carriers with the amphibious assault personnel of the Baltic Fleet’s marine infantry, the press office said.
