Russian pilots destroy ‘enemy’ planes at drills over Sea of Japan

Pilots from the composite aviation unit of the Eastern Military District downed “enemy” planes at drills with live firing over the Sea of Japan, the press service of the Eastern Military District reported on Thursday.

“The crews of high-altitude interceptors MiG-31, multi-purpose Su-35Ss and Su-34 bombers were involved in the drills. They carried out firing on special targets, aircraft flares, which the crews of the Su-30SM fighters planted at an altitude of more than 9,000 meters,” the press service reported.

The pilots launched air intercept missiles. The crews also trained to detect, follow and approach targets. After the combat firing the crews carried out air maneuvers to avoid the “enemy’s” retaliatory strike. A total of more than 30 flight missions were carried out during the drills.

As US pulls out of Syria, Netanyahu insists Israel can defend itself on its own

Against the backdrop of the US military’s withdrawal from Syria, criticized by some analysts who warn it will create a vacuum to be filled by powers that don’t share Israel’s interests, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted on Thursday that Israel will defend itself on its own against regional threats.

“As in 1973, today we also greatly appreciate the important support of the US… At the same time, we always remember and implement the basic rule that guides us: Israel will protect itself, on its own, against any threat,” said Netanyahu during a memorial ceremony at Jerusalem’s Mount Herzl national cemetery for those killed in the Yom Kippur War.

The prime minister avoided directly mentioning the US decision to pull out from Syria, instead focusing on the “current source of aggression in the Middle East: the Iranian regime in Tehran.”

Netanyahu accused the Islamic Republic of “striving to tighten its grip” on countries throughout the region, referencing the downing of a US drone and the targeting of Saudi Arabian oil refineries.

Turkey says 109 militants killed in advance into northeast Syria

Turkish forces have killed more than 100 militants in an assault on Kurdish militia in northeast Syria, Turkey’s president said on Thursday, as heavy shelling and air strikes against targets in the region continued.

According to a senior Turkish security official, armed forces struck weapons and ammunition depots, gun and sniper positions, tunnels and military bases.

Jets conducted operations up to 30 km (18 miles) into Syria, and a Reuters witness saw shells exploding just outside the town of Tel Abyad.

“The operation is currently continuing with the involvement of all our units… 109 terrorists have been killed so far,” President Tayyip Erdogan said in a speech to members of his AK Party in Ankara.

Thousands of people have fled Ras al Ain towards Hasaka province since the operation began. The Turkish air strikes killed at least five civilians and three fighters from the SDF and wounded dozens of civilians, the SDF has said.

NATO member Turkey has said it intends to create a “safe zone” for the return of millions of refugees to Syria.
